A five-channel video installation with five timers features irises in varying shades, from pale to deep purple, slowly blossoming. The paler irises bloom quickly, while the darker ones grow at an excruciatingly slow pace. The piece is inspired by studies examining the correlation between skin color and the speed of naturalization for newcomers in U,S.—the darker the skin, the longer the process.
The work reflects on systemic discrimination faced by the displaced, drawing a parallel between the slow growth of the darker irises and the prolonged, often arduous journey toward inclusion.
