Archive of Anticipated Ruins

Archive of Anticipated Ruins complicates what is memorable in the records of history and examines the representational value of historical records, both through and against the imperial gaze.

The handheld size of the perforated images depicts the ruins of Persepolis, the occupation of the U.S. embassy in Tehran with blindfolded mission staff surrounded by revolutionaries, and an aerial view of the American aircraft carrier (CVN-69) deployed during the 1980 Operation Eagle Claw in response to the hostage standoff. The representational value of these images lies in the continuous presence of U.S. expeditionary warfare in the Strait of Hormuz, serving as an ongoing assertion of imperial dominance and control over global oil shipping routes.

While the choice of images in the series emphasizes dislocation and restrictions of movement—expanding the perception of borders beyond geographical limits—the use of the postcard as a traveling medium further challenges the boundaries imposed by geopolitical realities.
